Rent Kim Dave on the LOANHOOD APP

What inspired you to become a designer?

I wanted a medium where I could connect my love for colour, voluminous shapes and my experiences of growing up in Southern Nigeria with the hope that someone else would relate to this.

What's the story behind the name of your brand?

The name Kim Dave is a combination of my other English name ‘Kimberly’  & my Dad’s name. I chose this because I’m drawn to styles and fashion of past generations which I often redefine using modern style methods

Elegant, fun and modern

What's one piece of advice you wish you had received when you were starting out that you would want to pass onto someone else.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. We learn from them and are better for them.

How do you stay creative and inspired in your work?

I often watch catwalk shows of other designers and visit art galleries with interesting exhibitions. I sometimes find creative inspiration on social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram.

Share a memorable moment from your journey.

Meeting Lisa Folawiyo in 2023 at a pop up in London. She’s one of Nigeria’s power fashion houses and someone I admire. She complimented some of my designs, which was a very surreal moment.

Tell us about your favourite fashion era and why.

It has to be the 80s. I love how vibrant and colourful both fashion + beauty was in that era. You could just tell people enjoyed experimenting with their style.

Why do you use LOANHOOD to loan your designs?

Some designs in my collection are quite over the top for everyday wear. I’ve found making them available for renting gives customers the opportunity to wear the designs for their special occasions or for a photo shoot. It also prevents my design samples from sitting in a box forgotten.

What can LOANHOOD users expect from your rental collection?

More designs from past and future collections for sure.

How do you navigate challenges specific to being a woman in the fashion industry, and what advice would you give to other women facing similar obstacles?

Unfortunately, the fashion industry like many others, is affected by stereotypes and bias. I stay focused on my goals and capabilities and not let those stereotypes hold me back. I allow my work and achievements to do the talking.  My advice to other women would be to find mentors who can provide guidance as you navigate your career. Also don't hesitate to negotiate for fair compensation, promotions, and opportunities for growth. Know your worth and be proactive in advocating for yourself.
